The Weather

Allegedly in this country we are obsessed by the weather, and although we don’t suffer the extremes of other countries, we do all need to have one eye on the forecast as we plan our gardening tasks. A previous blog has suggested things to bear in mind at this time of year, with the prospect of adverse conditions over the coming months, and a few more are to follow.

The weather last winter was severe, and hopefully will not be repeated this winter. But now is the time to think of protecting vulnerable plants from wind, frost and excessive rainfall. Have a fleece or bubble wrap at the ready in case frost is forecast. Put some mulch around the roots to protect them. If the plants are in pots, are those pots frost resistant? If not, think of protection. And make sure the pots are free draining to avoid waterlogging. Try and keep the plants sheltered from the wind and in a relatively sunny position.

Fences, sheds, etc. Make sure they’re in good condition. Are fences secure, and sheds water tight? Your household insurance policy may exclude them and not cover the cost of any repairs should damage occur.

But lets ensure this blog ends on a brighter note. Have you thought of winter bedding? (Plants!). A few containers, planted up now and in a sheltered part of the garden can offer attractive colours and textures during the winter period. Plants to bear in mind include heathers (winter flowering), pansies, wall flowers, violas and cyclamen.

As with all gardening, have fun doing it, and enjoy the results.
