A few more Autumn hints for you – bits and pieces to do, or at least to remember when next at the garden centre. It’s time to think of planting spring greens (cabbage, broccoli, etc), onions (early growth can be used as spring onions) and winter mixed lettuces.
For a good early year floral display, tulips, croci, daffodils and many many other bulbs can be planted between now and the end of November. The earlier they are planted the better as the soil is still warm and it avoids the risk of them rotting. Hanging baskets can be filled with winter pansies and violas for winter colour.
Give the lawn a scarify to clear out dead grasses and other debris, and a feed to give it a health boost.
Don’t be put off by adverse weather – a bit of outdoor work now will reap benefits next year. Use leaves from the garden in your compost bin and don’t forget to turn the compost to aerate it!! Plants can now be divided for new young plants for the spring in your perennial borders.
An attractive garden is a delight, but needs regular attention to keep it looking fresh, and half an hour or so a day will be rewarding in so many ways. Don’t forget though that if things really get out of hand, or you want a major change, you may wish to call us in for consultation and a quotation.
